Business website development: a clear route from visit to enquiry

Plan a corporate website with services, people, case studies and a contact form that helps prospective clients understand your offer.

Answer three questions on the homepage

Visitors need to understand what you do, whom you help and what to do next. “Welcome” alone does not communicate an offer. Use a clear service statement, supporting explanation and relevant example. Homepage design should establish understanding before asking for attention with visual effects.

Choose the primary action: an enquiry, a consultation or viewing your services. Too many equally prominent actions can create uncertainty. B2B decisions may involve several visits, so keep services, working methods and contact details easy to find without disruptive prompts.

Give each page a clear role

About explains the company and its approach. Service pages describe scope, intended customers and information needed for a proposal. Team pages introduce actual people and responsibilities when the business wishes to publish them. Contact supports the next conversation.

Case studies should describe real challenges and results you can support. Label design concepts as examples. Do not invent clients, ratings or achievements to fill space. A clear process and useful demonstrations provide a more reliable foundation for trust.

Prepare content before final layouts

A page list is not a complete brief. Prepare service explanations, audiences, common questions and boundaries. Use photographs of people or products when they support the message and you have permission. Generic imagery should not replace meaningful business information.

Agree who writes, verifies and approves the content. Plan translations alongside the structure when additional languages are required. Heading lengths affect layout, and service terminology must make sense to the audience in each market.

Include mobile use and real form delivery

Responsive design is more than shrinking desktop pages. Navigation, controls, tables and forms need to work on small screens. Visitors should be able to read, select a service and submit an enquiry without struggling with tiny targets. Support keyboard access and avoid effects that obstruct reading.

Ask only for information needed in the first conversation. Test message delivery, validation and failure feedback. A success message is not evidence that an email arrived. Confirm recipients and enquiry handling before handover.

Define handover and ongoing responsibility

Cost depends on content, languages, functionality and integrations, not just page count. A presentation website and an account-based portal have different requirements. Separate design, development, content entry, hosting and maintenance, and agree acceptance criteria and ownership.

Check pages, forms, metadata and mobile layouts. If the client needs to publish independently, include an appropriate CMS and instructions; a static website does not provide an editor automatically. Agree who fixes errors and keeps the business information current.

Example: a B2B company receiving vague enquiries

Repeated questions about whether a service is available may indicate unclear pages. Describe each main service with scope, examples and the information needed for an enquiry. A form can offer a topic choice and project description without demanding excessive details immediately.

Connect relevant work to the corresponding service rather than isolate every reference in a gallery. If a client project cannot be published, use an honestly labelled concept and explain the process.

Questions before accepting a proposal

Who writes the copy and supplies photographs? How many languages are included? Are form delivery tests covered? Who owns the domain and access? Can the client edit through a CMS, or are changes handled by a supplier?

Document future scope changes such as languages and integrations. After launch, review actual enquiries and recurring questions to improve explanations rather than redesign without evidence.
